About the FitScript Placemat Program...
A decline in physiological functioning is a common occurrence among older adults, most often due to deconditioning because of a lack of physical activity. Those that are at a highest risk of functional disability are the sedentary older adult and the frail elderly. However, prevention at an early age can help minimize and even avoid disability due to physical inactivity.
In keeping with the National Healthy People 2000 Objectives and outcomes, the primary focus of the FitScript Placemat Program is to maintain or improve functional fitness among the adult and senior population. Functional fitness can be defined as a level of fitness necessary for an individual to perform various activities of daily living as well as maintain an independent lifestyle. The program is designed to improve muscular strength and endurance, balance, and coordination.
Patricia A. Brill, Ph.D., co-author of the FitScript Placemat program, has been awarded the 1997 South Carolina’s Governor’s Health Promotion Award in Research for an exercise placemat called "The Kitchen Table is Not Just for Eating, Let’s Exercise". This program was designed to improve strength and balance, and was successfully implemented in South Carolina’s Health and Human Services community long term care programs. In 1998, Dr. Brill also received the Special Recognition Award from the National Healthy People 2000 initiative for her continued work with exercise and the older adult.
A Pilot Study was conducted to measure the effectiveness of the placemat program in South Carolina and the results were not surprising:
*Balance improved by 36% *78% more confident
*92% decreased fear of falling *86% felt better
*88% increased activity levels *59% less depressed
Sturdier on feet, fewer falls and injuries, better ambulation and gait, able to perform more daily tasks are just a few of the ways in which exercise has contributed to life long health.
